Primary Classroom News

Foundation

Dear Foundation Students and Parents,

It has been great to have everyone back at school again. The children have been super happy. We also have a whole lot of new vocabulary from Zoom. We can now talk about muting ourselves in class, with a few giggles of course.

Teachers have assessed the children’s knowledge and understanding of letter names and sounds, as well as writing simple sentences in Literacy. While we do not have any formal homework for the remainder of term 2, there is currently a daily phonics program available online that might be useful for revision at home. A new letter is available every day at 9:30 am and remains online for 24 hours after publishing. The children in Foundation are currently completing the Set One lessons. Please find the lessons via this link below or search Google for Ruth Miskin Training, YouTube.

Thank you once again to our lovely parents for all your support during the past term. It has been challenging and also a great learning opportunity for us all. It has been great to see how much the children have learned at home; the opportunity to work one on one with a grown-up has been extremely beneficial for many children.

Year 1

Dear Parents,

It has certainly been a term to remember. Our congratulations to all Year 1 students for the successful completion of Term 2. As teachers, we know that remote learning had some challenges but we were able to get through it thanks to both our wonderful parents and students. It was also fantastic to see our students face to face in Week 7 of Term 2. What an achievement!

In numeracy, the learning continued with number and algebra (counting backwards) and measurement with area and length. Some work was also completed with positioning and location where students learnt key words such as - in, on, next, under, between, anti-clockwise and clockwise.

In literacy, students continued to learn about explanation writing and were asked to write a text involving “How a plant grows?” Emphasis was placed on punctuation, the use of correct sequence words, spelling and sentence formation.

For integrated studies, students brought their dioramas to school and presented these in class. They were then asked to explain the managed, natural and constructed features of their dioramas to their peers. Thank you to all our students for the effort and detail represented in their dioramas. They looked amazing!

As we experienced the change of seasons from Autumn to Winter, students created an Autumn tree using an informal mosaic method of cutting and pasting paper. Students also painted a ceramic plate with a Japanese inspired cherry blossom branch. They also experimented with oil pastel and coloured an image that involved the subject matter in the rain.

Once again, thank you for your support during these unprecedented times. We would not have been able to teach our students remotely if it were not for the dedicated parents that we are so lucky to have in our year level.

Keep your families safe and we look forward to seeing everyone in Term 3.

Year 2

What a strange Term Two we have had. We would like to welcome all our students back to school. It is great to have everyone back.

Mindfulness -

During the past few weeks we have been focusing on our students’ mental health. We have incorporated activities such as, mindful colouring, mindful thinking and other well-being activities to ensure our students seamlessly transition back to our regular learning schedule.

National Simultaneous Storytime -

As a whole school we participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. NSS is an event in which participants around Australia read a story at the same time together to promote the value of reading and literacy. Our students enjoyed listening to the story Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas, written and illustrated by Lucinda Gifford.

Integrated Studies -

For our geography unit, we have been learning about Australia’s states and territories and their capital cities. The students have enjoyed being able to point out the locations which ties in fantastic with our location and transformation maths unit.

We wish you all a safe and restful holiday, ready for a fresh new start in Term 3.

Year 3

This term has been such an adjustment as we all had to begin our remote learning journey. The students have performed extremely well under the circumstances. They have had to attend our zoom sessions and complete their work on My Ed. The students had to learn a whole new set of skills very quickly and exceeded all expectations.

This term in Integrated Studies, we focused on Geography. We learned about the states & cities of Australia. We also explored our famous landmarks such as Uluru & Kakadu National Park. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to learn about our neighbouring islands and the World Climate Zones.

In Literacy, we worked on persuasive writing. The students explored the structure of writing and different language conventions necessary to write a persuasive text. The students had to try and convince their teachers, using strong arguments and strong persuasive language to support their own personal contentions which were ‘Should we Ban homework? & ‘Should we do the bubble-gum experiment at school? ‘

This term in Maths, we explored a number of different topics such as Place value, Odd & even numbers, Area & length and Angles. The students completed work from their books and online on My Ed. The students did a wonderful job!

Thank you to all parents and guardians for assisting and encouraging their children during this time. It has been a learning opportunity for us all. We are very excited to have the students back at school for the end of term.

Well done Grade 3!
We are very proud of each and every one of you.
